The purpose is to further study the association between human semen quality, infection of ureaplasma urealyticum(Uu) and content of interleukin-6(IL-6) in serum and seminal plasma. Routine semen tests and cultivation of Uu are carried out to samples of semen fluid. IL-6 concentrations were measured in the supernatants by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA). IL- 6 concentrations of seminal plasma were no different between the group infected with Uu and the group not infected with Uu, while IL-6 concentrations of serum of group infected with Uu was significantly (p<0.05) higher than that of group not infected with Uu. IL-6 concentrations of seminal plasma or serum were no different between the group with normal semen quality and the group with abnormal semen quality. Infection of Uu increases IL-6 level of serum, and does not increase IL-6 level of seminal plasma. The level of IL-6 receptor affected the action of IL-6 in the seminiferous tubule or seminal plasma, and there is no direct relation between human semen quality and concentrations of IL-6 in serum or seminal plasma.
